We LOVE Kahoot, and we have posted on that before (see the category menu on right where Kahoot is a category).
Another great one that we learned at #TCCA15 is Quizizz! Similar to Kahoot, it is an interactive quiz game. However, it is student paced.Therefore, you can have everyone in the class working on the quiz at the same time but on their own pace. It also has hilarious memes. Who doesn't love hilarious memes? Well...for those of you that don't, you can turn them off. Like Kahoot, you can make the quizzes public so we have made one for you to see (and use if you wish!) that compares mitosis vs.meiosis: goo.gl/AjphU9 We would recommend that if you make any quizzes on this website --- yet want the answers to be secure --- to make them "private." Making quizzes public also makes the answer key public as well. So in our previous topic, we talked about how students can create GIFs to bring vocabulary and processes to life.
Now, we can focus on what to do with them! As you may know, student created GIFs work on most teacher websites. They also work in PowerPoints (once you are in slideshow mode). Did you know that GIFs play in Kahoot? Kahoot is an awesome, interactive quiz game that works with all device types. Load a GIF like a picture and ask a thought provoking question that relates to the GIF. GIFs also work in Google docs, Google slides, etc. Instead of a card sort---consider an animated one using a Google Doc and GIFs! Click here for an example of a Google Doc showing a virtual card sort! Virtual discussion boards can be powerful tools for collaboration! However, it can be challenging to set them up if they also require students to have accounts.
TodaysMeet makes it so easy to create a discussion board---you don't need an account to make one. You can also give it a unique name and set up when you want it to expire. Then just give your students the URL. It will prompt students to provide a "nickname" and voila! Consider asking thought provoking question prompts or asking students to share ideas or questions on a topic. This is especially useful during a time that students may be watching a short video in class, as students can contribute thoughts, ideas, or questions they may have while the video is playing! Oh---and if you do want extra features such as access control? Make a free teacher account on the website. Response systems allow you to immediately collect student responses, which makes them powerful when used as formative assessments throughout a lesson. Response systems not only tell you what your students do and do not know, but they can help you in modifying your instruction to meet student needs during instruction.
Here are some our (FREE) favorites! Plickers- Print out free Plicker response cards from their website (it's better if you print them on cardstock rather than just paper). Install the free Plickers app on your mobile device. Students hold up the printed Plickers cards to respond to a multiple choice question (A,B,C, or D) and all you need to do is just wave your mobile device in front of the cards. It captures footage of them and immediately gathers results. It is awesome! Kahoot- An awesome quiz show game that works on all kinds of devices! Teachers can make their free quizzes on getkahoot.com. After making your quiz, you can activate it. This will give a pin number so that students can join your quiz by visiting kahoot.it and typing in the pin number. Poll Everywhere- A great way to poll your students! This website not only does multiple choice but also allows participants to text in responses. Create your poll and it will walk you through the process! |
